How it began!

The oldest rocks in New Zealand are over 500 million years old, which were apart of Gondwanaland. These split up about 160 years ago, and new Zealand separated from it about 85 million years ago.

New Zealand sits on 2 tectonic plates, the Australian and the pacific. 15 of these huge moving chunks of crusts make up the earths surface. New Zealand gets a lot of geographical action because the north island and a part of the south island sit on the Australian plate while the north island sits on the pacific. These plates are constantly grinding and shifting into each other.
